Phoenix, Arizona’s capital city, is located squarely in the middle of Arizona and forms the heart of the Metropolitan Phoenix area. Famous for its hot summers and just-right winters, Phoenix averages over 310 days of clear blue skies a year.

Nature lovers will be impressed with Phoenix’s gorgeous desert landscapes, spectacular multi-hued sunsets and plentiful hiking opportunities, while visitors who prefer the creature comforts of the big city will appreciate Phoenix’s culturally diverse museums, relaxing resorts, upscale shopping centers and thriving nightlife.

Phoenix is also home to some of the nation’s most well-known golf courses.

Papago Golf Course

Papago Golf Course is a municipal course located just 15 minutes away from downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor Airport.

Nestled within historic Papago Park, Papago Golf Course is well-insulated from the sounds of the city and offers a tantalizing taste of Arizona’s natural beauty.

The 72-par, 18-hole Papago Golf Course was completely renovated in 2008 to prepare it for use as an LPGA Tour course in 2009.

Among other improvements, the 2008 renovation included an increase of the course’s yardage to 7,333, restoration of all bunkers and fairways, and the removal of an entire lake.

Thanks to these and other more subtle changes, each hole at Papago Golf Course presents a new challenge. Strategic bunkering and hazards abound, with tees at varying lengths to accommodate players of all skill levels.

The Legacy Golf Resort

Located at the base of Phoenix’s scenic South Mountain, The Legacy Golf Resort’s 18-hole, 71-par course spans 6,908 yards. The engaging course also boasts one of the Phoenix golf scene’s most intriguing background stories.

Part of a 7,500 acre ranch in the early 1900s, The Legacy Golf Resort incorporates many of the original turn-of-the-century structures into the course itself.

Grain silos which were once the tallest structures in Maricopa County still flank the 18th fairway, while the historic bunkhouse which marks the first tee once sheltered the likes of President Teddy Roosevelt and Pancho Villa.

The Legacy Golf Resort offers a world-class driving range, putting and chipping area, club and cart rentals, private instruction from world-renowned LPGA professionals, a restaurant and over 300 spacious, well-appointed luxury suites for extended stays.

The course itself has won numerous awards, including Golf Digest’s “Top 10 Golf Courses to Play in Phoenix” and “Top 50 Great Service Facilities” awards.

Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale

No list of Phoenix golf courses would be complete without including the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale, usually referred to as TPC Scottsdale.

TPC Scottsdale annually hosts the best-attended golf tournament in the world, the Waste Management Phoenix Open (formerly the FBR Open). Consistently ranked in Arizona’s top ten by the likes of Golf Digest and Golfweek Magazine, TPC Scottsdale is a PGA Tour facility, offering 36 holes of tournament-level golf and professional services and amenities.

TPC Scottsdale is just minutes from Phoenix’s northeast city limits. It offers two courses, the Champions course and the Stadium course, both of which are open to the public and set against a breathtaking view of the McDowell Mountains.

The Champions course offers an 18-hole, 71-par game, featuring 7,115 yards of Bermuda greens and diverse, challenging holes which can be approached in any number of ways by players of all skill levels.

Designed by Randy Heckenkemper to be the “consummate desert golf experience,” the Champions course makes extensive use of the area’s natural desert terrain, seamlessly integrating the natural foothills and ravines.

Like the Champions course, the Stadium course is also 18 holes and 71 par, but spanning 7,216 yards, it covers a little more ground.

The Stadium course is the course used for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and as such, is the course most people think of when they talk about TPC Scottsdale. If you’re looking for a true PGA Tour experience, the Stadium course is the way to go.

TPC Scottsdale also features a golf shop, golf instruction, an award-winning restaurant and on-course refreshments from their Beverage Cart service.
