Go On An Adventure

One of the most exciting things to do is to simply visit a country and to play the golf courses that they have to offer. This is probably the most enjoyable way to enjoy your trip as you and your golf buddies will simply go through the golf courses trying to figure out which one will be the most fun. The drawback to this strategy is that you will not have a game plan behind your vacation but it will make for a great spontaneous adventure.

For the golfer who just has to add to their personal venues, there are many wonderful golf course choices throughout Sweden. As a matter of fact, there are more than 430 of them. One golf course that offers as much beauty as it does challenge is the PGA of Sweden National. This particular golf course is actually two 18-hole championship parkland courses. They are located in the grounds of the spectacular Torup Castle.

The links golf course is one of small but deep bunkers and large rolling hills. This course provides golfers with a challenge as it has a 20-metre difference in altitude. Seven holes of the course are enhanced with a small stream, which demands additional golfing skills. The Great Football Experiment is really a simple one. Nivea issued a challenge to amateur football clubs around the country. Many teams applied, but only one was chosen. That club was Ivory, F.C., a bunch that will get to make good on this experiment. The premise behind the experiment is to see just how far a team can come in a short period of time with the right type of preparation.

Nivea is setting up the Ivory club with a couple of great coaches. From there, those coaches are working hard with the team to ensure that it is in shape. The club will go through traditional training, learning everything from technique to fitness. The idea is to get this bunch ready for the biggest test of their footballing lives. At the end of the process, Nivea will put the experiment to its final test, pitting Ivory against a team of English football legends. That is where the story will get incredibly interesting, as the Ivory club will see just how it has come.

Ivory’s players are not pros. They are normal, everyday footballers just like you might see out on the street. How will they come close to competing against absolute legends of the game? The idea is to get them prepared through a tough training schedule. With the help of Nivea, these guys could transform from a group that’s not fit to a group that is fit to play just about anyone. How this will end is anyone’s guess.

Guinness Rugby “Some Are Made of More” commercial depicts an epic battle. Muddied armies face each one another and fighting ensues. The main character wins by successfully inserting his flag in enemy soil. The triumphant flag scene fades to a perfectly pulled Guinness, cream swirling delectably in an austere pint glass.

This rugby commercial was reminiscent of “Braveheart,” absent all the killing. Guinness’ “Some Are Made of More” was a grand scale commercial that was attention grabbing and made the viewer curious about what exactly was being advertised. When the final scene cut to a Guinness, every viewer likely had the taste for a cold, delicious Guinness. Guinness was very clever with their theme and revealing their product at the end of the commercial and in doing so the product was desirable without pushing it on consumers.

This advertisement evokes a sense of gamesmanship and athleticism and plays right into the heart of rugby fans worldwide. Guinness is often perceived as a manly beer and this commercial extends that perception. Guinness was successful in promoting their theme “Some Are Made of More” by depicting one man overcoming many obstacles and almost single-handedly winning the battle. Every sports fan knows that on the rugby pitch there are winners and there are losers. Quite simply, some are made of more. There will only be one winner of the Rugby World Cup. In the realm of beer sponsors and advertising in general, Guinness won the hearts of viewers by investing in such a memorable commercial befitting the seventh quadrennial Rugby World Cup.

Golfers carry up to 14 clubs in their bag, each of which is designed to hit the ball a different distance. All clubs have some degree of loft, which is the slant of the club face.

That loft helps the golfer get the ball airborne. Some clubs have less loft, allowing the player to hit the ball farther. Other clubs are more lofted for shorter, high shots. Clubs are also different lengths and have different design features–each with its own purpose.

Woods

Woods are designed primarily for distance. The woods are so-named because the heads were originally carved from a block of wood–beech, ash, maple and persimmon. Today, the club heads are made of titanium, steel and alloys; a golfer who wants a wooden wood must have it specially made by a club maker.

Professional golfers can hit the ball in excess of 300 yards with woods.The head of a wood is rounded or oblong, and the bottom, or sole, is broad. The wood designed to hit the ball the farthest is the driver, which also has the least amount of loft and the longest shaft. Fairway woods can include the 3 wood, 5 wood and 7 wood. The lower-numbered clubs have less loft and hit the ball farther.

Irons

The irons are intended for shots where accuracy is the main consideration. The club heads are made of forged iron, steel or titanium and are thinner than the woods. These clubs are numbered one through nine and also include the wedges, which are the most lofted of the irons.

The irons decrease in shaft length in half-inch increments and increase in loft as the number of the iron gets higher. Because of the lower loft, even experienced golfers have trouble hitting accurate shots with the 1 and 2 irons, and standard sets of clubs do not include them.

The skill of the golfer determines how far he can hit his irons. A beginner might hit a 9 iron 80 yards, while a professional would hit the same club 150 yards or more.

Wedges

The wedges have the most degrees of loft for short, high shots than land on the green and stop quickly. They include, in ascending order of loft: pitching, gap, sand and lob.

The pitching wedge is standard with a set of clubs. If the irons were to continue their numbering system, the pitching wedge would be a 10 iron and the gap wedge would be an 11 iron.

The sand wedge, invented by professional golfer Gene Sarazen in 1931, is specifically designed to hit out of sandy areas called bunkers, but can also be used for a shot off the fairway or out of the higher grass.

Sand wedges have shorter shafts and a design feature called “bounce”–a slant of the sole, or bottom, of the club–which allows the club to glide through the sand rather than dig into it. The lob wedge has the most loft, allowing the golfer it hit high shots over obstacles.

Putters

The putter is the club golfers use the most during a round of golf. It has a straight or nearly straight face for rolling the ball on the green. The blades come in a wide array of shapes and sizes, such as mallet-type putter heads and flat blades. 

The shaft length of a standard putter varies between 30 and 36 inches, but of all the golf clubs, the length of the putter’s shaft is the most variable. Some players use a belly putter, with the handle long enough to nestle up under the players belly.

Others employ a broomstick putter, with a handle long enough for a player to hold it with his hands in front of his chest.

Hybrids

The hybrid club combines characteristics of fairway woods and irons. The head of the club is smaller than a wood but larger than an iron, and the shaft length is shorter than a wood, allowing better control. Hybrids replace the longer irons and have more loft than the irons they replace, making them easier to hit in the air.

Golf Management

If you like to golf, a career in golf management might seem like a no-brainer. Many people choose golf management as a career track because it affords them the opportunity to play and teach the game they love.

Many other duties are required when managing an entire golf course. Concession management, course finances and course maintenance keep the professional at a golf course busy.

Concessions

Have you ever noticed on the golf course how the beverage cart driver just happens to arrive right at your thirstiest? Part of this requires planning. The beverage cart person generally heads for the middle of the front nine or back nine to start serving beverages.

Why? Your location on the course has you at the farthest point from the clubhouse. The beverage cart driver would not make money and tips if they caught you on the 18th green.

The head professional of the golf course needs to plan strategies like this to maximize revenue. If the head pro can’t make the course profitable, it could fold.

Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable

While some large golf facilities might have accountants or bookkeepers, a smaller golf course might rely on the golf course manager/head professional to keep up with accounts. Many items such as food and beverage, golfing equipment and accessories and golf clothing need to be stocked in a golf clubhouse, and these items need to be paid for. Sales might require the course to charge the buyer’s credit account.

Keeping good books, knowing when the money comes in each month as well as what goes out can determine the success of a golf course.

Course Maintenance

No one will want to play your golf course if it is in bad shape. Most courses have groundskeepers who mow the fairways, keep the rough and deep rough in line and maintain the greens. These groundskeepers need direction from management, and your desired vision of the course needs to be communicated to the groundskeeping staff.

What type of fairway grass will be used? Aeration, which helps to relieve soil compaction on greens, needs to be scheduled at certain times. These questions can determine what condition your course is in throughout a hot summer.

Golf Lessons

When managing a golf course, especially as a PGA professional, you can expect to give quite a few lessons to amateurs. An excellent source of income, golf lessons also represent an effective way to get free advertising through word of mouth. If your lessons result in better golfers around the area, expect lots of repeat business and new customers.

Since golf lessons generally require only the head professional of the course to use his already acquired skills to teach, they can provide some of the highest profit for a golf course.

They are the clubs that dominate the short game, and shave strokes off of your score from 100 yards and in. The wedges can differ slightly in design and loft, but the purposes remain the same.

Pitching Wedge

Often considered the baby brother of the 9 iron, the pitching wedge usually features a loft around 48 degrees and is used for most amateurs for a shot from 90 to 140 yards.

Sand Wedge

An essential for most beginners, the sand wedge usually features a loft around 52 degrees, and is used for sand shots and distances of around 50 to 90 yards.

56 Degree

The 56 degree lob wedge is a club that most beginners will not have in their bags. It is used for shots just inside of sand wedge range, from 30 to 50 yards.

60 Degree

The 60 degree lob wedge, or loft wedge, is used much like the 56 degree variation. It can be helpful in short shots just off of the green.

64 Degree

The 64 degree, usually the most lofted club in a golf bag, is used for very high shots, sometimes over trees. These shots are designed for accuracy as they provide the least amount of spin or roll.

Gap Wedge

The gap wedge, sometimes an alternate or substitute of the pitching wedge, is more of an actual wedge than the pitching wedge. It is usually lofted around 48 degrees, and is used for shots around 70 to 120 yards.

Hybrid Wedge

The hybrid wedge is often used by female golfers, and older and younger golfers. It is equipped with a larger club head and allows weaker swingers to hit the ball farther.

Function

Golf course management requires a combination of skills that incorporates elements of the retail, hospitality, sports and customer-service fields. Golf course managers must have a solid knowledge of the history and mechanics of the sport to be able to speak easily and intelligently with avid golfers.

They must know and apply sound management techniques to the pro shop, golf club, golf course and any adjacent businesses. They set the standard for professional and personal appearance and ethics. Golf course managers are ultimately responsible for the satisfaction of the patrons of the course.

Types

There are three types of educational studies that can lead to a career in golf course management. A diploma program in golf course management is a nondegree course of study that can provide basic entry level training.
